Paxton Pits Nature Reserve
Whether you want to watch birds, or simply explore some beautiful countryside, then Paxton Pits is a site worth visiting. There are well-signed trails for you to follow, two bird hides to rest in and many seats for you to sit & watch the wildlife.
Over the next 10 years the reserve is due to expand more than 3 ½ times following further gravel extraction. Keep an eye on the website for updates!
Many events are held throughout the year; look on the website for all the information or pick up an events leaflet from the reserve. Groups can also organise a guided walk with one of the many enthusiastic & knowledgeable volunteers followed by a refreshing cuppa in the newly extended Visitors' Centre afterwards.
The site is also home to Highland cattle for part of the year and they can be seen grazing on one of the many meadows around the site. Parts of the reserve are being managed under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme so you can see the results of wildlife-friendly farming techniques which are encouraging wildlife such as harvest mouse, barn owls and yellow hammers.
