Cycling and Walking
Huntingdonshire is a paradise for walkers and cyclists, just awaiting discovery. The scenery undulates through water meadows, river valleys and riverside parks. There are miles of waymarked public footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing through open countryside and nature reserves. Many link countryside parks to charming market towns and villages. Pause to enjoy a picnic in the fresh air, indulge in a cream tea or take a well earned rest at a welcoming pub.
Huntingdonshire is ideal for a gentle stroll or a day walk. The more energetic can walk the Ouse Valley Way, a 26 mile long distance footpath along the River Great Ouse, passing through the attractive old towns of St Neots, Godmanchester and St Ives. Visit www.ousevalleyway.org.uk for more information. The Pathfinder Long Distance Walk is a challenging 46 mile route. This waymarked walk links the air bases at Wyton, Graveley, Oakington and Warboys. For the less ambitious, these long distance walks can be broken into shorter day walks. There are also walking trails around each of the historic market towns.
Couples and families will enjoy cycling around the miles of mainly traffic-free tracks skirting Grafham Water. A whole range of cycles is available to hire, all catering for differing needs. Huntingdonshire's countryside is easily explored on two wheels; quiet lanes and byways pass through rural patchworks of greens, golds and blues. There are few steep hills, just gentle ones to create open vistas stretching out to the horizon. Relish life at a slower pace, noticing changes in scenery from the Ouse Valley, to villages of thatch and timber and the peat black fens. There are 14 cycle routes around the scenic villages of Huntingdonshire, which can be downloaded from this site.
