Ramsey grew up around its Abbey, founded on the edge of the fens on a marsh surrounded island. The Abbey became one of the most important monastic buildings in England and the town prospered until the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town prospered again with the drainage of the fens and the farming of the rich agricultural land. The town also has associations with the Cromwells. The source of the Great Plague, which killed over 400 people in Ramsey, was believed to have been brought to the town on some cloth delivered from London for a coat for Colonel William Cromwell.

Today, Ramsey has a lovely rural air. Clustered around the smooth lawns of Abbey Green are the Abbey Gatehouse, The Almshouses and Parish Church of St Thomas à Becket. The porter's lodge is the only remnant of the magnificent 15th century Abbey Gatehouse. The remains of the Abbey now form part of the Abbey School. Church Green, complete with duck pond, is a perfect place to see different architectural styles.
